Mary Baumeister was born in 1934 in Frankfurt, Germany. She studied under Max Bill at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm. She later had a studio in Cologne between 1960 and 1962, which is considered to have been one of the birthplaces of the Luxus movement. After her first exhibition at the Stedelijk in Amsterdam, she moved to New York, where she found great success. Museums like the MoMa, Whitney and Guggenheim started acquiring her work. In New York, she developed friendships with Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Niki de Saint Phalle, and Jean Tinguely. In 1972, she moved back to Cologne and has been working and living there ever since.
