Hedi Mertens is a Swiss abstract artist. In her square paintings, Mertens finds an inexhaustible theme of orthogonal field division and colour placement, the opposition of form and colour is suspended, surface form is always also colour form.

"Merten’s work reflects an element of the musical, perhaps one could also say the poetic, in the formal organisation of the picture and above all in the confident use of colour, despite all the logic and consistency of the procedure. Instead of a fleeting glance, a deeper lock is required. Only the intense looking allows us to see how the comparatively simple and rational gains complexity and leads directly to the limits of the irrational. Perhaps even beyond."
