Pablo Picasso, born in Málaga in 1881, was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. After his blue and rose period in 1907, he developed the cubist style together with Georges Braque. He was also the first to incorporate the collage technique into his work. After the Neo-Classicism of the late 1920s, he developed his own surrealistic cubist style, which continued to transform until the end of his life. In his late work Picasso explored old masters and started using ceramics as a medium for his sculpture. Two of Picasso's most famous works are the 1907 painting Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, the first Cubist painting, and the 1937 work of Guernika, which focuses on the bombardment of the Basque town of Guernika.
