Marianne von Werefkin, born 1860 in Tula, Russia, was an important representative of the expressionist movement. In 1892 she met a young Alexei Jawlensky with whom she developed a personal and artistic relationship. Later in Munich, Werefkin stopped painting and devoted herself to fully supporting Jawlensky. In 1906, after a ten-year break, she began to paint again. The pictures are characterized by a strong and expressive power. In 1918 she settles in Ascona, where she would remain until the end of her life. There she organized exhibitions of local as well as international artists of the artist group Der Grosse Bär. After her death, most of her works went to the Marianne Werefkin Foundation in Ascona, where they are still exhibited to this day.
